The wind has blown off the Atlantic Ocean since before time. Linger on North Cape at sunset and watch the sun sink slowly into the ocean. North Cape is famous for its natural rock reef which sees the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Northumberland Strait meet with magnificent results. At low tide, stroll along the reef and enjoy the many seabirds and marine life. Watch the seals relaxing in the sheltered water and local fishermen harvesting Irish moss.

The many highways and byways serve as a perfect means for visitors to explore and better appreciate the fascinating system of sandy beaches, dunes, fresh-water ponds, salt-water marshes and woodlands. Deep bays and their estuaries almost divide the island, leaving only a narrow isthmus between them that is less than 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) wide at some points. The many lighthouses reflect the historic ties to the sea. Broad beaches backed by low dunes rim the north shore. Along the south shore there are low, crumbling cliffs of red sandstone, which face Northumberland Strait.
